Better conversations,

better relationships,

better results

The opportunity most organisations miss…

The quality of every relationship in your organisation – with clients, colleagues, your leadership team – is determined by the quality of your conversations.

When conversations work well, trust builds, decisions are clearer and people are at their best.

When they don’t, the cost accumulates (often quietly) in missed opportunities, disengaged teams, and time and energy spent managing the fallout.

Average annual cost of conflict to UK employers:
£1000 per employee*

*ACAS, Estimating the Cost of Workplace Conflict, 2021

Only 10%
of UK workers describe themselves as feeling engaged at work**

**Gallup, Indicator Employee Engagement, 2025

Not because of pay and conditions but, according to Gallup, due to dysfunctional relationships – particularly between managers and those they manage.**

It’s a costly, vicious circle hurting both you and your organisation.

It doesn’t have to be this way.

The most effective leaders aren’t those who communicate the most – they’re the ones who connect most effectively.

And crucially connecting with someone else is a skill that anyone can learn.

Solution

Enter the 5 Steps to Effective Conversation

This simple framework gives you a practical set of tools to be the active agent in every conversation. It shows you how to approach each one with intention, openness and the ability to build genuine trust.

Whether you are navigating a complex negotiation, running a board meeting or holding a colleague to account, the same principles apply.

And by strengthening your connections with people around you, it has the potential to achieve results you might not have thought possible.

Process

So how does it work?

The 5 Steps programme is built on a core insight – we are most productive when we experience life as an active network of human relationships, not just as a series of two dimensional transactions.

Every conversation either strengthens or weakens that network and using the 5 Steps will ensure that you act to strengthen yours, consistently.

Over a series of six sessions, our approach focuses you on developing your skills and building confidence through applying them to real conversations that fit your individual needs.

Practise is supported by online resources that make it easy to continue to keep doing this once the programme finishes.

One-to-one coaching

Gain the skills and attitude to have effective conversations through a series of coaching sessions, where you will be able to work through the most pressing conversations you’re currently facing. It’s a very practical approach.

Group programme

Embed the skills and attitude within your team by going through the programme with them as a cohort.

Four group sessions will teach the 5 Steps of Effective Conversation, supported by online resources. Each participant will also receive two 1:1 coaching sessions to individualise their learning.

I think the revelation for me and for all of us was that it wasn’t just the big conflict stuff, it was the little areas of discomfort. It’s the going into a meeting and thinking, ‘Oh, not really looking forward to this. Why do I feel apprehensive? What is it about?’ And you don’t know. So what this course did was give me a framework.

Alison Hopkins

Chief Executive, Accelerate

It was really helpful in 1:1 conversations with our key Commissioners. It got us to a point of trust where in negotiation we were able to respond to their needs and they were willing to respond to our needs with real financial benefits.

The programme was really valuable professional development. It’s had a really positive impact on how I can communicate my needs, as well increasing my confidence in my ability to respond to challenge and criticism effectively. I’ve used it in coaching the team and this in turn has seen fewer parental complaints, higher staff morale and a reduction suspensions.

Kristina Yates

Executive Principal, Turner Free School

The techniques shared have transformed how I communicate with my team, helping improve productivity, strengthen relationships, and ultimately drive better business results. It’s opened my eyes to just how powerful — and costly — conversations can be.

I have often avoided dealing with situations as I was worried about the consequences of things going wrong. It meant that I’ve wasted a lot of time and energy stressing about things. Using the 5 Steps and the simple tools it offers has been really useful to build my confidence to have challenging conversations to resolve difficult things in a way that doesn’t feel confrontational.

The 5 Steps process has helped me get much more clarity in my conversations with a wide range of stakeholders from the commissioners to the most important one of all, our customer. Not only that, by having a structure to have more effective conversations, I have seen the senior leadership team build an understanding of each other’s needs, solve problems together, drive accountability and increase their productivity both as individuals and as a group. It’s offered us a great return on our investment.
